Beekeeping for Beginners Series
In the spring of 2015, Edmonton’s city council passed an amendment to permit beekeeping in the city, opening up a whole new world for beekeeper wannabes (no pun intended!). If you’re interested in finding out more about keeping honeybees and why it’s such a rewarding experience, join local urban beekeeper Dustin Bajer in this exciting beginner series.

Beekeeping for Beginners Level 1
An important first step in keeping bees is to understand honeybee biology, behaviour and evolution. Gain the basic knowledge you need for effective beekeeping: honeybee anatomy, pheromones, communication, seasonal behaviour, swarming, overwintering, genetics, castes and life cycles. Dustin will provide an overview of all these elements to prepare you for the next level of learning.
Beekeeping for Beginners Level 2
Once you understand bee basics, the next step toward successful beekeeping is learning to manage your own beehive. Over the course of three hours, you’ll discuss municipal and provincial guidelines, what you’ll need, and how to set up and manage your own backyard beehive. We will cover hive types and tools, where to purchase equipment, licensing hives, different ways of acquiring bees and managing a beehive throughout the season.
