Please note:  Quarterly fast track courses move TWICE AS FAST as semestered courses. Students should consider the time and space they have to dedicate to their studies in choosing the timing of course-delivery.

Understandings of Ideologies - Students will examine the origins, values and components of competing ideologies. They will explore multiple perspectives regarding relationships among individualism, liberalism, common good and collectivism. An examination of various political and economic systems will allow students to determine the viability of the values of liberalism. Developing understandings of the roles and responsibilities associated with citizenship will encourage students to respond to emergent global issues.


Students without the prerequisite must withdraw from class with no refund if they are under 20 years of age as of September 1 of the current school year. Prerequisites: Social Studies 20-1: 40% or higher; Social Studies 20-2: 50%. 


Students must write a diploma exam in November, January, April, June OR August.

Please read: 

REGISTRATION for this class begins Wednesday, July 17 and will close Thursday, November 7 at 4:00 pm. From Friday, November 8 to Friday, November 15 at 4:00 pm - ONLY students who are CURRENTLY ATTENDING an EDMONTON PUBLIC SCHOOL may register if there are seats available in the class. NOTE: Quarterly fast track courses move twice as fast as semestered courses. Students should consider the time and space they have to dedicate to their studies before choosing to enroll in a Fast Track course.

This 8 week class is delivered all ONLINE. Classes are held 3 days per week: Tuesdays & Thursdays – 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm AND Saturdays 8:30 am to 1:50 pm. Students are expected to be present on all days and to participate and be engaged in learning activities for the duration of class time.

For this course – students MUST have a Chromebook, laptop, or desktop computer available for their use (not a cell phone or tablet). The device used must have a webcam, a microphone, and access to the Internet.

To complete this course and receive an official grade on their transcript from Alberta Education, students must write a diploma exam.

TOTAL COST - Students under 20 years on Sep 1 of the current school year: A $60 non-refundable program fee. Students 20 years and over on Sep 1 of current school year: $60 non-refundable program fee and $589 tuition.

All study/reading resources required for this course are in an ONLINE FORMAT and access will be supplied by your teacher. Students are expected to provide their own dictionary and/or thesaurus.

NOTE: There will be no classes during Winter Break: December 23, 2024 to January 3, 2025. There WILL be class on Saturday, January 4, 2025.
