This academic program is designed to study matter and its changes. The program emphasizes the context of science by considering the interrelationships among science, technology and society. Students, through the study of Chemistry 20-30, are given an opportunity to explore and understand the natural world and to become aware of the profound influence of chemistry on their lives. The four topics covered are: Thermochemical Changes, Electrochemical Changes, Chemical Changes of Organic Compounds and Chemical Equilibrium Focusing on Acid-Base Systems. Prerequisite: Chemistry 20: 50%. (It is recommended that students taking Chem 30 also have Math 20-1 or 20-2.) Students without the prerequisite must withdraw from class with no refund if they are under 20 years of age as of September 1 of the current school year. Students taking this class may be required to write a diploma exam in November, January, April, June or August. Prior to exam administration dates, Alberta Education will inform all Alberta High Schools whether or not exams will be administered for any sitting throughout the school year. Students and teachers will be informed of Alberta Education’s decision for any given exam sitting.  Alberta Education charges $26.25 to rewrite a diploma exam and the fee is payable directly to them. Students considered to be rewriting an exam are those that have written the exam for this course in the last 2 years.
