Students in English 30-1 will analyze, respond to and create complex texts as well as identify and examine ways in which cultural and societal influences are reflected in a variety of Canadian and international texts. The 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 course sequence challenges students to develop a level of sophistication in their literary analyzes and written expression, making 30-1 the necessary prerequisite for most university faculties and other post-secondary institutions. Prerequisites: English 20-1 or English 30-2: 50%. Students without the prerequisite must withdraw from class with no refund if they are under 20 years of age as of September 1 of the current school year. Students must write a diploma exam to complete this course. Diploma exams are offered in January, April, June, August or November. Alberta Education charges $26.25 to rewrite a diploma exam and the fee is payable directly to them. Students considered to be rewriting an exam are those that have written the exam for this course in the last 2 years. Students are expected to supply their own dictionary and thesaurus.
