Perspectives on Ideology - Students will explore the origins and complexities of ideologies and examine multiple perspectives regarding the principles of classical and modern liberalism. An analysis of various political and economic systems will allow students to assess the viability of the principles of liberalism. Developing understandings of the roles and responsibilities associated with citizenship will encourage students to respond to emergent global issues.

Prerequisites: Social Studies 20-1 OR Social Studies 30-2: 50%Students without the prerequisite must withdraw from class with no refund if they are under 20 years of age as of September 1 of the current school year.

Students taking this course must write a Diploma Exam in November, January, April, June OR August. 

Students may choose to re-do their diploma exam. If a student has written the diploma exam for this course within the last 3 school years they are considered to be rewriting. For students who decide to rewrite an exam, please note that Alberta Education charges $26.25 to do so and the fee is payable directly to them through their myPass account.

Students are expected to supply their own dictionary and thesaurus.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

REGISTRATION for this class, between TUES Apr 23 and TUES Apr 30, is available ONLY to students who are CURRENTLY ATTENDING an EDMONTON PUBLIC SCHOOL. Registration for this class CLOSES at 4:00 PM on TUES, April 30, 2024.

Please note: Quarterly fast track courses move TWICE AS FAST as semestered courses. Students should consider the time and space they have to dedicate to their studies in choosing the timing of course-delivery.

This Metro Academic Class is offered in an 8 week, Quarterly Fast Track format. This class is delivered all ONLINE. Classes are held 3 days per week: Tuesdays, Thursdays – 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm AND Saturdays 8:30 am to 1:50 pm. Students must be present for all learning activities in order to be successful in the course.

All classes will begin with a teacher led live lesson. Students are expected to be engaged in learning activities for the duration of class time (until 9:30 pm on Tuesdays & Thursdays and until 1:50 pm on Saturdays). Students will use SchoolZone to access their online class. Further information about SchoolZone is outlined in your Class Confirmation email.

For this course – students MUST have a Chromebook, laptop, or desktop computer available for their use. The device used must have a webcam, a microphone, and access to the Internet. DO NOT USE a cell phone or tablet since all the programs you need to access to be successful in the course will not display properly. If you do not have your own device or access to one, please call Metro Customer Service at 780-428-1111 to discuss options available.

All study/reading resources required for this course are in an ONLINE FORMAT and access will be supplied by your teacher.

Students taking this class are REQUIRED TO WRITE a Diploma Exam. Diploma exams are offered in November, January, April, June OR August. Dates & times are published in the Student Handbook which will be made available to you upon registration.

TOTAL COST - Students under 20 years on Sep 1 of the current school year: $60 non-refundable program fee. Students 20 years and over on Sep 1 of current school year: $60 non-refundable program fee and $589 tuition.

There are NO classes May 18 or May 21, 2024.
