English 30-1 - FALL 2025: Semester 1 M/W - Online Synchronous Class

In ELA 30-1, students analyze and respond to literature, including extended texts (a novel or nonfiction book, a feature film or modern play, and a Shakespearean play) and shorter texts (poetry, short stories, visuals and multimedia, essays, and popular nonfiction) that relate to cultural and societal issues in Canadian and global contexts. They also create their own texts, e.g., fiction, nonfiction/ persuasive writing, presentations/media. This course is for students considering careers that may require strong reading and communication skills and for those interested in post-secondary education.
 
Prerequisites: English 20-1 or English 30-2: 50%. Students without the prerequisite must withdraw from class with no refund if they are under 20 years of age as of September 1 of the current school year.

Students taking this course must write a diploma exam according to the provincial assessment calendar.

Please read: 

REGISTRATION for this class begins Wednesday July 16, 2025 and will close on September 1, 2025. From Tuesday September 2, 2025 to Monday September 15, 2025 at 4:00 PM - ONLY students who are CURRENTLY ATTENDING an EDMONTON PUBLIC SCHOOL may register if there are seats available in the class by calling Metro at 780-428-1111.

This Metro Academic Class is offered in an ONLINE Semestered format from September 8, 2025 to January 7, 2025. Classes are held Monday & Wednesday evenings from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Classes begin with a teacher-led live lesson. Students are expected to be present on all days and to participate and be engaged in learning activities for the duration of class time.

For this course students MUST have a Chromebook, laptop, or desktop computer available for their use (not a cell phone or tablet). The device used must have a webcam, a microphone, and access to the Internet.

As this is a 30 Level course students must write a diploma exam to receive an official grade on their transcript from Alberta Education.

TOTAL COST - Students under 20 years on Sep 1 of the current school year: A $75 non-refundable program fee. Students 20 years and over on Sep 1 of current school year: $75 non-refundable program fee and $600 tuition.

All study/reading resources required for this course are in an ONLINE FORMAT and access will be supplied by your teacher. Students are expected to provide their own dictionary and/or thesaurus.

NOTE:There will be NO CLASSES October 13 & 20, November 12 and Christmas Break - (December 22 - January 2, 2026).
