Math 30-1 - FALL 2021: Semester 1 M/W - Online Synchronous (Live Online Teacher Instruction)

In the Math 30-1 program, students will prepare for entry into post-secondary programs such as engineering, mathematics, sciences or other programs that require advanced math skills. Topics include trigonometry, relations and functions, permutations and combinations and binomial theorem. This course is a co-requisite for Math 31.

Prerequisite: Math 20-1: 50%. Students without the prerequisite must withdraw from class with no refund if they are under 20 years of age as of September 1 of the current school year.

Diploma exams are offered in November, January, April, June or August and students taking this course are required to write the diploma exam. Students are considered to be rewriting an exam if they have written the exam for this course in the last 2 years. For students who decide to rewrite an exam, please note that Alberta Education charges $26.25 to do so and the fee is payable directly to them. You pay the fee through myPass.

A graphing calculator is required for this course and students are expected to supply their own.

Please read: 

Online Synchronous (Live Online Teacher Instruction): Students will meet with their teacher on specific dates and times each week. In this online teacher directed program, students have the opportunity to learn with their peers and to be part of an online learning community. Attendance in a synchronous program is mandatory. A teacher will be teaching during every scheduled class.

This Metro Academic Class is offered in an ONLINE Semestered format. Classes begin in September 2021 and end in January 2022.

Classes are held 2 days a week – Mondays & Wednesdays. All classes will be held ONLINE from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Students must be present for all learning activities in order to be successful in the course. Each class will begin with a teacher led live lesson. Students are expected to be engaged in learning activities for the duration of class time (until 9:00 pm). Students will use SchoolZone to access the online portion of their class. Further information about SchoolZone is outlined in your Class Confirmation email.

For this course – students MUST have a Chromebook, laptop, or desktop computer available for their use (not a cell phone or tablet). The device used must have a webcam, a microphone, and access to the Internet. If you do not have your own device or access to one, please call Metro Customer Service at 780-428-1111 to discuss options available.

Students taking this course must write a diploma exam: exams are offered in November, January, April, June or August.

TOTAL COST - Students under 20 years on Sep 1 of the current school year: $60 non-refundable program fee. Students 20 years and over on Sep 1 of current school year: $60 non-refundable program fee and $589 tuition.

A $100 refundable textbook deposit is required for your course. The deposit is refunded upon satisfactory return of textbook(s). Metro’s Customer Service will send you an email with instructions for pick-up of your textbook.

A graphing calculator is required for this course and students are expected to provide their own.

NOTE: There will be no classes: Sep 27, Oct 11, Nov 10, Nov 25 and during winter break Dec 18 to Jan 2.
