This academic program is designed to study matter and its changes. The program emphasizes the context of science by considering the interrelationships among science, technology and society. Students, through the study of Chemistry 20-30, are given an opportunity to explore and understand the natural world and to become aware of the profound influence of chemistry on their lives. The four topics covered are: Thermochemical Changes, Electrochemical Changes, Chemical Changes of Organic Compounds and Chemical Equilibrium Focusing on Acid-Base Systems. Students must write a diploma exam in January, June or August. Alberta Education charges $26.25 to rewrite a diploma exam, and the fee is payable directly to Alberta Ed. Prerequisite: Chemistry 20: 50%. (It is recommended that students taking Chem 30 also have Math 20-1 or 20-2.) Students without the prerequisite must withdraw from class with no refund if they are under 20 years of age as of September 1 of the current school year. Textbooks and/or supplies will be distributed during the first class. Room assignments can change. Please check postings on the first class meeting.
